How to download Instagram video
Instagram video comes in four shapes—Reels, feed posts, Stories, and Live replays—and each has different save rules. You download your Instagram video through Save to device, archived Stories, or Meta's account export. You generally cannot download someone else's Reel as an MP4 through official channels. Videozify does not download Instagram video from URLs; we process MP4 files you upload after saving them yourself. Here's how each video type behaves and what file you actually get.

Instagram video types at a glance
| Type | Max length | Your content: download? | Others' content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reel | 90 sec–3 min | Save to device | Bookmark only |
| Feed video | Longer allowed | Save to device | Bookmark only |
| Story | 15 sec/slide | Archive save (if enabled) | Screenshot |
| Live replay | Hours possible | Save after broadcast ends | Usually none |
Searching how to download instagram video without specifying type leads to bad advice—Reels tutorials don't apply to expired Stories.
Reels: the most common Instagram video
Reels are vertical MP4s in the Reels tab. Download flow for your Reel:
- Profile → Reels.
- Open the clip → ⋯ → Save to device.
- Check camera roll for MP4 (typically 9:16, 1080×1920).
File size: 30–60 seconds of talking head ≈ 15–25 MB. Fast motion + music ≈ 35–50 MB.
Music blocks: Trending licensed audio sometimes disables Save to device even on your own Reel. Instagram's label deals override your export button. Workaround: keep the original edit from your phone's camera roll, or re-post with royalty-free audio.
Feed video posts
Longer horizontal or square videos on the main grid export like Reels:
- Open the post on your profile.
- ⋯ → Save to device (wording varies by region).
These sometimes include higher bitrates than Reels because they weren't re-encoded for the Reels algorithm. Still not lossless—Instagram compresses everything.
Stories and Live replays
Stories you posted:
- Profile → ☰ → Archive → Stories.
- Open the story → ⋯ → Save video (if still within archive retention).
Stories expire from the public feed after 24 hours. Archive keeps them for you—not forever unless you save or export.
Live replays: After you end a Live, Instagram can publish the replay to your profile. Once published, treat it like a feed video: Save to device on your account. Active Live streams have no downloadable file mid-broadcast.
Bulk download: all Instagram video in one ZIP
One-off saves don't scale for creators with hundreds of Reels.
- Settings and privacy → Your activity → Download your information.
- Select Reels, Posts, Stories as needed.
- All time, High quality, HTML or JSON.
- Wait for email → download ZIP → extract on a PC with space.
A three-year creator account might produce 8–20 GB of video. Plan disk space before clicking download.
For editing after export: video compressor if files are too large to share, or video trimmer to cut dead air from long Live replays.
What doesn't work (and why we say no)
Paste-URL downloader sites: They scrape Instagram's CDN. Meta breaks them constantly. Many steal login credentials.
"Instagram video downloader" apps: App Store clones with malware reports. Broad permissions read your DMs.
Videozify: We don't offer Instagram video download. Our YouTube to MP4 converter handles YouTube links. Instagram video must reach your device through Meta's tools first.
Screen recording as last resort
When official download isn't available and you have permission (your own playback, creator OK'd it):
- iPhone: Control Center → Screen Recording.
- Android: Quick settings → Screen recorder.
Downsides: on-screen UI, notification banners, ~30% quality loss vs source, Bluetooth audio glitches. Fine for personal reference. Bad for republishing.
After you have the MP4
| Need | Videozify tool |
|---|---|
| Shorter clip | Video trimmer |
| Smaller file | Video compressor |
| Audio only | Extract audio |
| Different aspect ratio | Resize video |
Upload from your device. No instagram.com URL field exists on our site.
Conclusion
Match the method to the video type: Reels and feed posts use Save to device; bulk needs Download your information; Stories need Archive. Skip third-party downloaders—Videozify included, we don't scrape Instagram.
