Lossless vs lossy audio: when FLAC and WAV are worth the space

Lossless audio stores every sample. WAV is uncompressed PCM. FLAC is compressed PCM you can restore exactly. Lossy formats like MP3 throw data away on purpose so the file fits a phone. Videozify writes MP3 for portability and offers WAV or FLAC when the page’s job is an archive or an editor bounce.

If you have a FLAC you need on a car USB that only lists MP3, convert FLAC to MP3 in the browser and keep the FLAC. That one sentence is the whole lossless-to-lossy rule. The rest of this guide is when not to take that hop, and why “FLAC from MP3” is not a restoration.

What is lossless audio?

Lossless audio is a recording format that stores every sample so a decode matches the PCM you started with. WAV is the usual uncompressed wrapper. FLAC squeezes the same PCM with a reversible codec. A four-minute stereo CD-quality WAV is roughly 40MB. The same audio as FLAC is often 20–25MB. As MP3 at 192kbps it is about 5.5MB.

You use lossless when you might recut, remaster, or listen on a system that will show the difference. You use MP3 when the destination is a phone, a car, or an email cap.

What does lossy actually throw away?

MP3, AAC, OGG, and Opus keep a perceptual model of the sound, not the waveform. Quiet details next to loud ones disappear. That is the point. On a Bluetooth speaker the missing data is often inaudible. On a master you still hoped to mix, it is already gone.

When is WAV worth the space?

When a DAW, sampler, or broadcast chain asked for PCM. When you just bounced a mix and the next step is processing, not a commute. Extracting MP4 to WAV on Videozify is the video-to-editor path. Extracting to MP3 is the commute path. Pick once.

WAV is not “better MP3.” It is a different job. A 40MB file on a phone is how storage fills with takes you will never open in Audacity.

When is FLAC worth the space?

When you want lossless size closer to half of WAV, and the player supports FLAC. Many phones and cars still do not. That is why FLAC to MP3 exists. Archive FLAC; carry MP3.

Ripping a CD you own to FLAC, then making an MP3 for the car, is the intended two-file life. Replacing the FLAC with the MP3 is how collections get thinner and worse.

Should you convert MP3 to FLAC?

Only if a program demanded a FLAC path and you no longer have the real lossless file. The result is a larger wrapper around a lossy encode. Videozify will do that hop because the encoder can write the container. The article on that page tells you it is not a quality upgrade.

What should Videozify write for you?

Do not run a chain of MP3 → WAV → FLAC → MP3 “to be safe.” Each lossy hop is a generation. One encode from the best source you still have is the whole method.

What is a generation of loss?

A generation is one encode that throws data away. Camera AAC to MP3 is a generation. MP3 to MP3 at a new bitrate is another. WAV to FLAC is not a generation of loss — it is a reversible wrap of the same samples.

People stack converters because the first site wrote a weird wrapper and the second site wanted MP3. Each hop is a new perceptual model guessing at what the last hop already guessed. Videozify will still do a requested hop. It will not pretend the third MP3 is closer to the session tape.

The practical rule is: find the earliest file you still have, then take one hop to the format the destination needs. If that earliest file is already 128kbps MP3, you are stuck with 128kbps of information. A larger container will not invent cymbals.

Does “CD quality” mean lossless?

People say “CD quality” when they mean 16-bit, 44.1kHz, stereo PCM — the numbers a Red Book disc used. That is a sampling spec, not a promise that the file is lossless. An MP3 can be 44.1kHz and still be missing most of the original samples.

True CD rips you made yourself belong in FLAC or WAV. Streaming “CD quality” marketing is often 16-bit PCM after a lossy delivery pipeline you do not control. Videozify cannot audit a store’s encode. It can only refuse to pretend that MP3 to FLAC undoes it.

Is FLAC better than WAV?

Same samples, smaller file. WAV is simpler for some editors. FLAC needs a decoder. Neither is a magic upgrade of an MP3. If the source was already MP3, both wrappers still hold a lossy encode. Pick FLAC when you have PCM and want a smaller archive, not when you hope to restore a download.

Can I hear lossless on cheap earbuds?

Usually not versus a 192kbps MP3 of the same mix. You hear lossless later, when you recut or when a better system shows the missing air. Space is the other reason to keep it — future you may get better headphones. Future you cannot undecode an MP3.

Why is my FLAC still large?

Lossless compression has a floor. Dense music does not shrink like a voice memo. A 40MB WAV becoming a 32MB FLAC is normal. The dramatic shrink is MP3, and it is not reversible. If you needed 5MB, you wanted a lossy encode and a separate archive, not a smaller FLAC miracle.

Does Videozify upload lossless files?

No. WAV and FLAC conversions work like every other job. Large WAVs can exhaust phone memory. Convert those on a computer. A 200MB bounce is a RAM problem on phones.

Should podcasts be lossless?
