The best audio format for podcasts, and why
Listeners should get a lossy file, almost always MP3 at 128–192kbps for speech, or AAC in an M4A when the directory asked for it. You should keep a lossless archive of the mix. Videozify converts between those formats when you need a delivery copy.
If the mix is still a WAV bounce, convert WAV to MP3 at 192kbps for most shows, or 128kbps for a speech-only feed that must stay tiny. Keep the WAV. That split — delivery versus archive — is the whole format decision.
What do podcast apps actually play?
MP3 is a lossy audio format that podcast directories still treat as the compatibility default. Apple Podcasts, Spotify’s RSS ingest, Pocket Casts, car stereos, and cheap Android players all take MP3. AAC in M4A is common for Apple-heavy shows and some hosts that prefer it. Video podcasts are a different file and a different page.
Opus is excellent at low bitrates and still loses in directories that never listed it. FLAC in a public feed is how you blow a subscriber’s mobile data. WAV in a feed is worse.
Which MP3 bitrate should a show use?
Speech-only: 128kbps mono or stereo is enough for most voice. If two hosts overlap and you hear pumping at 128, use 192. Music-heavy shows should start at 192 and only go to 256 if you still have the WAV and you can hear the difference on headphones.
Videozify’s default 192kbps is a safe delivery encode from a WAV. Do not encode the same MP3 again at 320 “for quality.” That is a second lossy pass. See the bitrate guide.
Should the archive be WAV or FLAC?
WAV if your editor wants PCM on disk. FLAC if you are storing the mix for years and want the same samples in fewer megabytes. Either is lossless from the bounce. Neither should be what you paste into the host’s upload form.
If the only file you have is last year’s 128kbps MP3, that is the archive now. Converting it to FLAC does not restore the session.
How do you get audio out of a recorded video call?
Zoom and Teams exports are often MP4. Extract audio, then trim dead air, then boost if the room mic was polite. Do those on copies. The MP4 can stay the picture archive.
A four-minute extract at 192kbps is about 5.5MB. The MP4 might be 60MB. Feeds and cars care about the 5.5MB.
What about chapters, loudness, and ID3?
Videozify writes a plain MP3 or M4A. It does not chapter-mark, loudness-normalise to −16 LUFS, or stamp a podcast GUID. That is a DAW or a dedicated loudness tool. The volume booster is a fixed gain, not a podcast limiter.
If a host rejected the file, it is usually bitrate, sample rate, or a corrupt wrapper — not missing artwork. Re-encode once from the WAV. Do not run five online converters in a row.
Why encode locally?
An episode is a conversation you may not have permission to park on a stranger’s disk for 24 hours. Cloud converters do that by default. Videozify reads the bounce in the tab and writes the MP3 on the same machine.
The engine is about 25MB and downloads on first use. Later encodes in the session skip that. The episode itself never crosses the network as an upload.
What sample rate should a podcast use?
48kHz if the session was recorded at 48kHz, which most video calls and many interfaces use. 44.1kHz if the bounce came from a music DAW template that still thinks in CDs. Videozify does not offer a sample-rate menu on WAV to MP3. It encodes the audio it is given.
Do not resample three times across three websites. Hosts that reject 48kHz MP3 are rarer than hosts that reject 320kbps stereo speech for being huge. If a host documents 44.1kHz, resample once in the editor, bounce WAV, then encode MP3 here.
Should you strip a video podcast down to audio?
Yes, if the video was only a capture method. Zoom MP4 to MP3 is how a lot of interview shows start. Extract audio, then trim, then encode from a clean WAV if you still have one. Do not publish the first extract if you still planned to edit.
If the show is actually a video podcast, keep the picture and use a video compressor for the file you send the host. An MP3 feed and a YouTube upload are two products. Videozify will not mux chapters or a waveform video for you.
Frequently asked questions
Is M4A better than MP3 for podcasts?
- AAC can be a bit more efficient at a given bitrate. MP3 still wins on odd players and some cars. If your host and analytics assume MP3, stay on MP3. Videozify can write M4A from MP3 when a specific tool demanded that wrapper.
Should I publish 320kbps speech?
- Almost never. 320kbps is for music you still have as a high-quality source. Speech at 128 or 192 is the feed people actually finish. The extra megabytes delay downloads on a train and annoy subscribers on metered data. Keep 320 for the bonus instrumental, not the weekly chat.
Can I join two episode takes online?
- The audio joiner concatenates up to eight files into one 192kbps MP3. There is no crossfade and no loudness match. Trim pocket noise first. For a produced show with music beds, use a DAW, then encode the bounce once. Hard-abut is a patch, not a mix.
Does Videozify set podcast loudness?
- No. There is no LUFS meter on the volume booster. That tool multiplies amplitude by 1.5×, 2×, or 3× and can clip. For a public feed, loudness-normalise in an editor to your host’s target, then encode the WAV to MP3 here if you want the encode to stay on-device.
Is it legal to extract a guest’s Zoom video?
- You still need permission to publish the conversation. Extracting locally does not grant a licence. It only means the Zoom file was not also copied to a converter’s server on the way to MP3. Classroom and guest recordings stay other people’s voices after they become an MP3.
