Why convert WAV to FLAC?

WAV is a PCM audio format that stores every sample, which makes a four-minute stereo CD-quality bounce about 40MB. FLAC is a lossless audio format that stores a bit-perfect copy of that PCM in far fewer bytes. Unlike WAV to MP3, this path is reversible: decode the FLAC and you get the same samples back, not a perceptual sketch.

Typical shrink is on the order of 30–60% depending on how noisy or simple the audio is. A dense mix shrinks less than a sparse voice recording. Do not expect MP3-like 7× reductions. Those require throwing data away.

If you needed a phone file, WAV to MP3 is the listening path. This page is the archive path. Do not replace a master with MP3 and call it done.

If you only need one section of a live bounce, trim the audio after encoding. To combine several archival clips, join the audio once they are all FLAC or WAV, not while they are still session dumps.

Does converting WAV to FLAC lose quality?

No. FLAC is lossless relative to the PCM you fed it. A decode of the FLAC should null against the WAV. If it does not, the WAV was not the PCM you thought (float WAV, odd chunks) or the tool in the middle resampled.

There is no bitrate slider. Bitrate is an MP3 idea. FLAC has compression level internally; this preset uses ffmpeg’s default flac encoder, which is built for correctness in a browser tab, not a 30-minute argument about -compression_level 12.

24-bit and 96 kHz WAV files stay high resolution inside FLAC if ffmpeg reads them that way. You are not down-converting to 16-bit as a hidden step on this page.

Should you keep the original WAV?

Optional, once you have verified the FLAC decodes. Many people keep WAV in the session folder and FLAC in the archive. Some DAWs still prefer WAV on the timeline. FLAC is the copy you back up twice.

If the WAV itself was dumped from an MP3, FLAC will losslessly store that damaged decode. You do not get a real archive. Check the source size before you celebrate.

Phone memory is a weak reason to use this page. Phones often play FLAC now, but a listening copy is still usually MP3. Archive on a disk you control.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting WAV to FLAC lose quality?

No. FLAC stores a bit-perfect copy of the PCM. Decode it later and you should match the WAV. That is the opposite of WAV to MP3. Keep the FLAC as an archive and make MP3s from it when you need a phone file, rather than encoding MP3 from the WAV and deleting everything else.

How much smaller is FLAC than WAV?

Often about half, sometimes more for simple audio, sometimes less for dense noise-like mixes. It will not shrink like 192kbps MP3. If you need a 7× reduction, you are asking for a lossy format, which is a different page and a different promise.

Can I convert the FLAC back to WAV?

Yes. Use FLAC to WAV. That decode should match the original PCM. That round trip is the point of this pair. MP3 cannot do that round trip. If you still need a DAW-friendly WAV tomorrow, you can get it back from the FLAC.

Will this work on iPhone or Android?

Yes. Safari and Chrome run the engine. Uncompressed WAVs are large, so a long session can exhaust phone memory. Convert on a computer for files over 200MB..

Can I convert a whole album at once?

Not as a batch in this version. Drop one WAV, download the FLAC, then the next track. The engine stays loaded after the first file. A zip of an album is not unpacked here; convert the bounces you already extracted.

Is it legal to convert WAV to FLAC?

Archiving a bounce you recorded or have a licence to keep is the intended case. Distributing those FLACs is a different question. Videozify never sees the file and cannot judge your rights or a client contract sitting on that disk.
