Why convert MP3 to FLAC?
FLAC is a lossless audio format that stores PCM when the source is PCM. People still hit this page because a library tool, a DAP, or a DAW importer lists FLAC and rejects MP3. The conversion is a wrapper and a decode, not a restoration. A null test against a real CD rip will fail if the MP3 was the only source.
The file grows. A four-minute 192kbps MP3 of about 5.5MB becomes a FLAC that can land in the 15–30MB range depending on how noisy the decode is. That growth is expected. Anyone promising “HD FLAC from MP3” is renaming a decode.
If you still have the WAV, AIFF, or a real FLAC rip, use that. Decoding MP3 and calling it an archive is how collections accumulate fake lossless folders. This page exists for the honest compatibility case, and the copy says so in the first screen.

FLAC is a lossless audio format that stores PCM when the source is PCM, but a FLAC made from MP3 only stores the decoder output.
Does converting MP3 to FLAC restore quality?
No. FLAC compresses the PCM the MP3 decoder emits. Missing highs stay missing. The FLAC will bit-perfectly round-trip that decode, which is not the same as bit-perfect to a CD. Do not delete a real FLAC because this file has the same extension.
There is no bitrate control. FLAC does not use MP3-style bitrate. You get whatever sample rate the MP3 had, packed losslessly relative to that decode.
If you needed an editor-friendly file, MP3 to WAV is the more common DAW path. FLAC is for libraries that standardised on .flac as the ingest extension.
When should you not convert MP3 to FLAC?
When you only wanted to listen. MP3 already plays everywhere. Inflating it to FLAC on a phone is how you run out of iCloud for no audible gain.
When you still have the real lossless file. Always prefer that. Fake FLAC folders poison later encodes if you forget how they were made.

Does converting MP3 to FLAC restore quality?
- No. MP3 already discarded data. The FLAC losslessly stores the decoder’s output, not a studio master. It will not match a CD rip in a null test. Use this when a tool wants a FLAC wrapper, not to “uncompress” a track back to archive quality.
Why is the FLAC bigger than the MP3?
- FLAC is compressing PCM, not MP3 frames. The decode is a full sample stream. Packing that stream losslessly still takes more bytes than the original MP3 sketch. The growth is expected and is not a sign that quality came back.
Should I use WAV or FLAC from an MP3?
- WAV if the next step is a DAW that likes PCM files. FLAC if a library or DAP insists on .flac ingest. Neither restores the missing MP3 data. Pick the wrapper the destination asked for and keep the MP3 as the real source you had.
Will this work on iPhone or Android?
- Yes, technically, in Safari or Chrome. The output FLAC is larger than the MP3, so a long album can exhaust phone memory and then fill storage. Convert on the computer that will import the library. The MP3 is processed locally.
Can I convert several MP3 files at once?
- Not currently. One decode at a time keeps RAM predictable, which matters because FLAC output is bulky. Convert, download, then drop the next track. After the engine loads once, later files skip that download wait. There is no album-folder zip.
Is it legal to convert MP3 to FLAC?
- Decoding a recording you made or have permission to archive in another wrapper is the intended case. Expanding a commercial MP3 you do not have rights to use in a new collection does not become lawful because the wrapper is FLAC. Videozify never sees the file.
