Why convert AIFF to MP3?

AIFF is a PCM audio format that classic Mac apps, Logic bounces, and some Pro Tools sessions write, storing every sample much like WAV. How much smaller is an MP3 than an AIFF?

About the same math as WAV to MP3. A 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, stereo AIFF uses about 10MB per minute. A 192kbps MP3 uses about 1.4MB per minute. 128kbps speech lands near 1MB per minute.

The shrink is not free. On voice, 128kbps is usually enough. On dense music, 192kbps is the point where most people stop caring on earbuds. 320kbps is insurance, not magic.

If the AIFF is 24-bit, the MP3 is still perceptual audio at your chosen bitrate. You do not get a 24-bit MP3. Keep the high-resolution AIFF if that depth was the reason you bounced it.

Should you keep the original AIFF?
