Choose fileAn AAC to MP3 converter transcodes a raw AAC or ADTS audio file into an MP3 almost every player accepts. Videozify transcodes AAC to MP3. Drop the file, pick a bitrate, and download an MP3 for hardware that never learned to open raw AAC.
How to convert AAC to MP3
- Drop your AAC file onto the box above, or click Browse to choose it from disk.
- Choose an MP3 bitrate — 192kbps is the default and suits most listening.
- Press Convert and wait until the progress bar reaches one hundred percent.
- Download the MP3 when it appears; the file saves only to this device.
Why convert AAC to MP3?
AAC is a lossy audio codec that often appears as a raw .aac or ADTS stream rather than sitting inside M4A. Android voice apps, some broadcast dumps, hardware recorders, and extraction tools write that extension. Plenty of car stereos and cheap MP3 players still ignore .aac even when they would play the same audio as MP3. Compatibility is the reason, not file size — AAC is already small.
This page is not the M4A converter. M4A is the MPEG-4 audio wrapper iPhone Voice Memos use. Raw AAC is a different box around a related codec. If your file ends in .m4a, use that page. If it ends in .aac, stay here. Sending the wrong wrapper at a dropzone is how people get a reject before any encode starts.
Transcoding AAC to MP3 is a second lossy generation. Do it when the destination will not play AAC. Skip it when the phone or editor already does. You will not hear more detail at 320kbps than the AAC contained. Match the source bitrate when you can guess it; otherwise leave 192kbps.
If ffmpeg cannot parse the file, it may be an oddly wrapped MPEG-4 that should have been named M4A, or it may be corrupt. Do not rename .m4a to .aac to force this page. Use the matching converter so validation and presets stay honest.
If the AAC dump includes dead air at both ends, trim the audio after converting. If a hardware recorder captured too quietly, boost the volume on the MP3 copy.
AAC vs MP3: what's the difference?
| AAC | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Extension | .aac | .mp3 |
| Type | Raw AAC / ADTS audio | MPEG audio |
| Typical size (4 min) | 3–7 MB | 4–8 MB at 192kbps |
| Compression | Lossy AAC | Lossy MP3 |
| Quality | Already compressed | Second lossy pass |
| Device support | Phones and apps that decode AAC | Near universal, including old players |
AAC is a lossy audio codec that often ships as a raw .aac stream, which older players still refuse even when they play MP3.
Which bitrate should you choose for AAC?
Voice AAC is often 64–128kbps. 128kbps MP3 is enough for those files. Music AAC at 192kbps or more can take 192kbps MP3 as the default. 320kbps only inflates a low-rate voice note.
Expect the MP3 to be similar in size, sometimes larger, because MP3 is usually less efficient than AAC at the same listening quality. You are paying bytes for a wider decoder installed base, not for fidelity.
Tags and cover art on a raw AAC file are inconsistent. The output MP3 may arrive untitled. Name the file yourself for car stereos that sort by filename.
What's the difference between AAC and M4A?
AAC is the codec. M4A is a file that typically stores AAC inside MPEG-4 audio. A .aac file is often ADTS: a stream of audio frames with a simpler header. iPhone Voice Memos are M4A. Some Android and hardware exports are .aac. Both can hold AAC audio. The dropzone cares about the extension and the wrapper.
If you convert M4A on this page, validation should reject it. That is deliberate. The M4A page exists so Apple Voice Memos and iTunes-style files get the right copy and the right related links. This page stays focused on raw AAC.
HE-AAC and AAC-LC both show up in the wild. If the engine can decode the file, you get an MP3. If it cannot, the conversion fails rather than writing silence. Desktop ffmpeg can be a second opinion for exotic profiles this wasm build does not handle.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting AAC to MP3 lose quality?
- A little. Both codecs are lossy, so transcoding stacks two perceptual models. Speech stays usable at 128–192kbps. Music loses some air. Keep the AAC if the player already opens it. MP3 is the compatibility copy for hardware that never shipped an AAC decoder.
Is AAC the same as M4A?
- No. AAC is the codec. M4A is usually AAC inside an MPEG-4 audio file, which is what iPhone Voice Memos write. This page is for raw .aac / ADTS files. If your file ends in .m4a, use the M4A to MP3 converter instead of renaming the extension.
Why did my car reject the .aac file?
- Head units from the MP3-era USB generation often whitelist MP3 and WMA by extension. They never grew an AAC parser. Converting to MP3 is the usual fix. If the MP3 also fails, check the USB filesystem (FAT32) before assuming the codec is still wrong.
Will this work on iPhone or Android?
- Yes. Safari and Chrome run the engine. Raw AAC voice notes are usually small, so phones handle them. A long radio dump can still stress RAM. If the tab reloads, convert on a computer. The AAC file is.
Can I convert several AAC files at once?
- Not currently. One file at a time keeps memory use predictable. Convert, download, then drop the next stream. After the engine loads once, later files skip that download. A folder of voice clips is still one drop each — there is no zip unpacker here.
Is it legal to convert AAC to MP3?
- Transcoding a recording you made or have permission to use is normally fine. Transcoding a commercial stream you do not have rights to copy does not become lawful as MP3. Videozify does not store files and cannot check a licence.
