Where do YouTube downloads go?
YouTube downloads go to different places depending on how you saved them. Premium offline videos stay inside the YouTube app—not in your Downloads folder or Photos. Browser converter saves land in your device's normal download location: Downloads on PC/Mac, Safari Downloads or Files on iPhone, Chrome Downloads on Android. I spent ten minutes searching Finder once for a Premium "download" that was never on disk. This guide maps every path so you stop hunting the wrong folder.

Two types of "YouTube downloads" (different destinations)
Before opening folders, identify which method you used:
| Method | Where files live | Visible in file explorer? |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Premium offline | YouTube app → Library → Downloads | No |
| Browser converter (MP4/MP3) | Device Downloads / Files | Yes |
If you used Premium, stop looking in Downloads. Open the YouTube app.
If you used a YouTube to MP4 converter, the file is on disk somewhere below.
Where Premium YouTube downloads go
iPhone / iPad: Open YouTube → Library (bottom) → Downloads. Videos play only inside the app. They do not appear in Files, Photos, or iCloud Drive.
Android: Same—YouTube app → Library → Downloads.
Desktop (YouTube Premium): Limited offline on web. Most people use Premium offline on mobile only. There is no C:\YouTube Downloads folder for Premium content.
Premium files can expire if you cancel or go too long without connecting online. They're licensed for offline viewing, not file ownership.
Where browser downloads go on Windows
When you save an MP4 or MP3 from a converter in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox:
Default path: C:\Users\YourName\Downloads
Find it fast:
- Press Win + E to open File Explorer.
- Click Downloads in the left sidebar.
- Sort by Date modified—newest on top.
Chrome may ask "Save as" and let you pick another folder. If you did, check wherever you pointed it.
After download: Rename messy auto-titles if you want (dQw4w9WgXcQ.mp4 helps nobody). Move to Videos or an external drive if Downloads is cluttered.
Where browser downloads go on Mac
Default path: /Users/YourName/Downloads (Finder → Downloads)
Safari, Chrome, and Firefox all default here unless you changed settings.
Spotlight shortcut: Press Cmd + Space, type the video title or .mp4, hit Enter.
Moved to Movies? Some people redirect large files. Check ~/Movies if Downloads is empty.
Where downloads go on iPhone
iPhone has two common landing zones:
Safari Downloads (temporary staging):
- Tap the down arrow in a circle in Safari's address bar.
- Tap the file to preview.
- From there: Share → Save to Files or Save Video (Photos).
Files app (permanent storage):
- On My iPhone → Downloads if you saved there.
- iCloud Drive → Downloads if you use iCloud.
Photos: Only if you tapped Save Video. Then check Photos → Recents.
Premium offline? Still only in the YouTube app. Not Photos. Not Files.
Where downloads go on Android
Chrome default: Internal storage → Download (or Downloads)
Open the Files app → Downloads. On Samsung: My Files → Downloads. On Pixel: Files by Google → Downloads.
Gallery: MP4s may auto-index. Open Google Photos → Library → Utilities → Media from apps (varies by version).
SD card: If you chose external storage in Chrome settings, check the card's Download folder.
MP3 downloads vs MP4 downloads
Same folders, different apps open them:
| Format | Typical folder | Opens with |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 | Downloads / Files | Videos, Gallery, editors |
| MP3 | Downloads / Files | Music apps, Files |
Used a YouTube to MP3 converter? Same Downloads path as video—just a smaller file. A 3-minute MP3 at 192 kbps is roughly 4 MB.
Can't find your download? Checklist
- Confirm the download finished — partial files sometimes show then vanish.
- Check browser download history — Chrome:
Ctrl+J(Win) orCmd+Shift+J(Mac). - Search by extension — look for
.mp4or.mp3sorted by date. - Wrong method? — Premium users: check YouTube Library, not Finder.
- Private window — some browsers discard downloads when the session closes.
- Antivirus quarantine — rare, but corporate PCs sometimes intercept large downloads.
Changing the default download location
Chrome (desktop): Settings → Downloads → Location → Change.
Safari (Mac): Safari → Settings → General → File download location.
iPhone: You choose per save via Save to Files—no global default beyond Safari's Downloads folder.
Firefox: Settings → General → Downloads → Save files to.
Set a dedicated folder like ~/Videos/YouTube if you download often. Future-you will thank present-you.
Conclusion
Premium offline lives in the YouTube app. Converter downloads live in your normal Downloads folder—Downloads on desktop, Safari Downloads → Files on iPhone, Chrome Downloads on Android. Know which method you used before you search.
