Why convert MTS to MP4?
MTS is a MPEG-2 Transport Stream file that AVCHD camcorders from Sony, Panasonic, and Canon write to SD cards, often in a PRIVATE/AVCHD folder. The picture is usually already H.264. The problem is the wrapper: iPhone, many editors, and school portals want MP4, not a broadcast-style .mts that looks like a raw disc dump.
People reach for this after a wedding or school play, when the camcorder folder will not import into iMovie without a wait, or when Dropbox previews fail. You are not trying to shrink the file. You are swapping the box so the same H.264 plays in the apps you already have.
This preset uses stream copy and fast-start. Quality is unchanged when the copy succeeds. File size stays nearly identical. If someone promised a 90% shrink, they described a compressor, not a transport-stream remux.
Remux can fail if the MTS holds a codec MP4 will not store, or if there are odd data tracks. In that case the job errors instead of secretly crushing the picture. Keep the card copy until you have played the MP4 on the target device.
If the MP4 is still too large to email, compress the video as a second step. If you only needed a scene from the play, trim the video instead of remuxing a twenty-minute take for a one-minute clip.

Does converting MTS to MP4 reduce quality?
No, on a successful remux. The preset copies the bitstreams. There is no CRF and no bitrate slider. If the output looks softer, the camcorder already looked that way, or you did not use this tool.
AVCHD is often 1080i. Remuxing does not deinterlace. You may see combing on a progressive timeline. If that happens, deinterlace in an editor after the MP4 exists. A hidden deinterlace here would blur progressive clips that did not need it.
Output size should hug the input. A large drop means streams were left out. Open the MP4 and check picture and sound before you format the SD card.
What's the difference between MTS and M2TS?
They are cousins in the AVCHD family. .mts and .m2ts are both MPEG transport streams with slightly different naming by brand. This page accepts .mts. If your file is .m2ts, rename only after you have confirmed it is the same kind of stream — or convert on a desktop muxer that lists both.
The PRIVATE/AVCHD tree also holds playlist files that are not video. Dropping those here will fail. Convert the large .mts clips, not the XML sidecars.
Some camcorders split clips across 2GB files. Convert each piece. This tool does not stitch AVCHD spans together.

Does converting MTS to MP4 reduce quality?
- Not when stream copy works. The pixels are not re-encoded. Quality stays the same as the camcorder file. If the MTS uses a codec MP4 cannot hold, the job fails instead of secretly crushing the picture. Keep the card files until you have played the MP4.
Why won't iMovie import my camcorder folder?
- iMovie wants MP4 or a recognised camera bundle. A naked PRIVATE/AVCHD dump of .mts files often sits there until you remux. Wrapping the same H.264 in MP4 is the smallest change that unblocks import. You are not inventing a new encode when copy succeeds.
Is the MP4 smaller than the MTS?
- Usually not by much. Remuxing copies the same compressed frames into a different box. If you need a smaller file for email, compress the video after remuxing. Shrinking requires re-encoding, which this converter deliberately skips. This page is about compatibility, not shrinking a holiday card.
Will this work on iPhone or Android?
- The converter runs in Safari and Chrome. Camcorder MTS files are large, so a few hundred megabytes can kill a phone tab. Convert big clips on a computer. the camcorder file stays on the card or disk you chose.
Can I convert several MTS files at once?
