How to convert VOB to MP4
- Drop your VOB file onto the box above, or click Browse to choose it from disk.
- Confirm the selected title is the one you want; this conversion re-encodes to H.264.
- Press Convert and wait until the progress bar reaches one hundred percent.
- Download the MP4 when it appears; the file saves only to this device.
Why convert VOB to MP4?
VOB is a DVD Video Object file that sits in a VIDEO_TS folder beside IFO and BUP navigation. The picture is MPEG-2; the sound is often AC-3 or PCM. That pairing is what a living-room player expected in 2004. A phone in 2026 expects H.264 in MP4. Copying the disc folder to a laptop does not make iPhone understand it.
This page converts one VOB at a time. A commercial DVD is split across VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on, plus menus. This tool does not stitch a whole disc, decrypt CSS, or follow IFO playlists. If you ripped a home DVD you authored, drop the large title VOB, not the 100KB menu stub.
Re-encoding to libx264 CRF 23 ultrafast plus AAC is a second generation and a de-interlace is not included. Film-origin titles may look fine. Video-camera DVDs may comb. Keep the VIDEO_TS folder as the archive; treat the MP4 as the portable copy.
Use this for wedding DVDs you burned yourself, school recitals, and camcorder-to-DVD discs. Encrypted retail discs are a licence and decryption problem this browser tab is not built to solve — and should fail rather than pretend.
If the MP4 is still too large to keep beside the disc rip, compress the video. If you only needed one chapter from a long title VOB, trim the video after converting.
VOB vs MP4: what's the difference?
| VOB | MP4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Extension | .vob | .mp4 |
| Type | DVD MPEG-2 program stream | MPEG-4 container |
| Typical size (title) | Hundreds of MB per VOB | Depends on re-encode |
| Compression | MPEG-2 + AC-3/PCM | H.264 + AAC |
| Quality | DVD source, often interlaced | Re-encoded (CRF 23) |
| Device support | DVD players, VLC | Phones, web, editors |
VOB is a DVD Video Object file that stores MPEG-2 picture and disc audio in a VIDEO_TS folder phones cannot play as a camera clip.
Can this convert a whole DVD folder?
No. Drop one .vob. Menus, angles, and IFO playlists are not followed. If the feature is split across several VOB files, convert each and join in an editor, or mux them on a desktop first. A browser tab is the wrong place to rebuild a DVD title set.
Audio becomes AAC at 128kbps. Surround AC-3 on a DVD will be downmixed by ffmpeg’s default path. If you need the original 5.1 as a master, extract on a desktop and keep the VOB.
There is no quality dropdown. CRF 23 and ultrafast are fixed so the result is a predictable, playable MP4. Compress later if you need a smaller file for email.
What's the difference between VOB and MPEG?
Both can hold MPEG-2. VOB is the DVD-shaped program stream with navigation packing. A loose .mpg from a capture card is not a VIDEO_TS object. Use this page for .vob. Use MPEG to MP4 for .mpg and .mpeg.
IFO files are not video. Dropping VIDEO_TS.IFO here will fail. Convert the large VOB that actually contains the title.
Some “VOB” files on USB sticks are just renamed MPEG. This converter will still try to decode and write H.264. If it fails, the file may be corrupt or encrypted.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting VOB to MP4 reduce quality?
- Yes, because this is a re-encode to H.264. CRF 23 stays close for ordinary viewing. DVD MPEG-2 is already lossy and often interlaced. Keep the VIDEO_TS folder if it is the only master. The MP4 is the portable copy, not a restoration.
Can I convert an entire VIDEO_TS folder?
- Not as a folder. This tool takes one VOB file. Feature titles split across several VOBs need those files converted separately or joined first on a desktop. Menu VOBs are tiny and usually the wrong drop. Encrypted retail discs are outside what this tab should do.
Will the MP4 include DVD menus and chapters?
- No. Menus, buttons, and IFO chapters stay on the disc structure. You get a linear H.264 file of the video and a stereo-ish AAC mix. If chapters matter, keep the DVD layout as the archive and use the MP4 for playback on a phone.
Will this work on iPhone or Android?
- The converter runs in Safari and Chrome. DVD VOBs are large, so a 1GB title can exhaust phone memory. Convert on a computer. The work needs RAM a phone often lacks.
Can I convert several VOB files at once?
- Not currently. Each encode keeps frames in memory. Convert one, download the MP4, then drop the next. After the engine loads once, later files skip that download. A disc of several titles is still one VOB drop each; there is no VIDEO_TS folder picker.
Is it legal to convert VOB to MP4?
- Converting a DVD you authored, or a disc you have permission to copy, is the intended case. Decrypting and converting a commercial DVD you do not have rights to copy is a different question. Videozify does not store files and cannot check a licence.
