Why convert M4V to MP3?
M4V is an Apple MPEG-4 video file that iTunes, iMovie, and some TV-app exports write. Under the hood it is close to MP4. People extract audio when a course video, a kid’s iMovie project, or a DRM-free episode only mattered as sound for a commute. You do not need to remux to .mp4 first.
Protected iTunes movies will not decrypt in this tab. The conversion should fail rather than emit silence. This page is for unprotected M4V: your export, your encode, or a store file that is actually DRM-free.
Audio is usually AAC. Transcoding to MP3 is a second lossy pass for cheap players and cars that still list MP3. If iPhone already plays the M4V, you may only need the picture remuxed — or nothing at all.
Use M4V to MP4 when you still need frames on Windows. Use M4A to MP3 when the file is already audio-only Apple audio. The extension is the tell.
If you only needed a chapter of the soundtrack, trim the audio after extracting. For a dedicated extractor that is not tied to M4V, extract audio from whatever video you have.

M4V is an Apple MPEG-4 video file that iTunes and iMovie write, even when you only need the soundtrack as a widely playable MP3.
Which bitrate should you choose?
Match the source. Course videos are speech: 128kbps is enough. 192kbps is the default. 320kbps will not restore a laptop mic inside an iMovie project.
No picture is written. If you still need the video to upload somewhere that wants .mp4, remux M4V to MP4 instead of extracting audio.
FairPlay files fail. Do not retry in a loop. The engine cannot unwrap a store licence.
Will this remove iTunes DRM?
No. FairPlay-protected purchases will not decrypt. Use this page for unprotected exports. Stripping a store licence is not a feature and not a goal.
If iMovie wrote the M4V, you are in the intended case. If iTunes wrote a rented file, you are not.
Alternate audio tracks in iTunes extras are not a menu here. The default stream is extracted. Isolate a commentary in an editor first if you need it.
iMovie exports that used .m4v for “iTunes” compatibility are the files this page is for. A rented TV episode is not. If Finder shows a lock or iTunes asks you to authorise a computer, stop and use Apple’s player. An MP3 of a FairPlay file will not appear here.
TV episode files from old iTunes rips sometimes carry a second descriptive audio track. This page will not list it. If you need that track, isolate it in an editor, then convert the isolated file. Do not assume the commute MP3 is the visually described mix.
Frequently asked questions
Does extracting MP3 from M4V lose quality?
- A little, because MP3 is lossy and the soundtrack is usually already AAC. At 192kbps the extra loss is hard to hear on normal equipment. You cannot recover the picture later. Keep the original M4V if you might still need it.
Will this remove iTunes DRM?
- No. FairPlay-protected purchases will not decrypt here. The job should fail rather than write a silent MP3. Use this page for unprotected iMovie exports and DRM-free M4V, not to strip a store licence. This converter does not invent a FairPlay key.
Is this different from converting M4V to MP4?
- Yes. M4V to MP4 remuxes the picture for sites that whitelist .mp4. This page discards the picture and writes MP3. Use MP4 when you still need frames. Use MP3 when the file only mattered as sound for a commute or a cheap player.
Will this work on iPhone or Android?
- Yes. Safari and Chrome run the engine. Large 4K M4V files can still exhaust mobile memory because the whole clip loads. If the tab reloads, convert a shorter take or use a computer. Nothing is uploaded in either case; the M4V stays on disk.
Can I convert several M4V files at once?
- Not currently. One file runs at a time so the browser does not keep two videos in memory. Convert, download, then drop the next. The engine stays in the tab after the first load, so later extracts skip the initial download wait.
Is it legal to extract audio from an M4V?
- Extracting audio from a video you recorded or have permission to use is the intended case. Extracting a store title’s soundtrack may still be limited by the store’s terms. Videozify does not store files and cannot check those terms.
