GIF is a bitmap image format that stores a looping sequence of frames without an audio track, which made sense for chat. It is a terrible codec for anything longer than a reaction. Palette banding, huge files, and no sound are why Twitter, Discord, and a lot of CMS tools now prefer a short MP4 even when the source was a GIF.

This preset scales to even dimensions, writes libx264 at CRF 23 ultrafast, yuv420p, fast-start, and no audio (`-an`). Even dimensions matter because H.264 rejects odd widths. The MP4 will not invent a soundtrack. If the GIF was silent, the video is silent.

Quality cannot exceed the GIF. Banding in the palette stays. You may still win on file size because H.264 is better at motion than GIF. You will not get a film-like encode of a 256-colour loop.

Use this when a site rejects .gif but allows .mp4, or when you want the clip on a timeline. Use MP4 to GIF if you are going the other way for an image field.
